One autumn evening in October 1953, a group of residents in the Oddstad and Redwood Terrace tracts of Redwood City gathered to discuss concerns about their local neighborhoods. Areas of interest, for the emerging community, were unfenced creek crossings, lack of traffic stop signs, and creation of recreational facilities and parks.
With a shared purpose uniting the assembly, the Club was formed as a non-profit organization, and Officers and a Board of Directors were elected. Monthly meetings were convened, and a newsletter was published to keep members and residents informed. The club had considerable political clout with the city of Redwood City, and a close relationship evolved with the city council during the early years of the club's existence.
Along with its work towards community civic betterment, social activities soon became an essential focal aspect of the membership. Dances, bingo, potluck dinners, spaghetti nights, wine tasting, fashion shows, costume parties, annual barbecues, children’s events, holiday boutiques, and New Year’s Eve balls have all been part of the colorful history.
Through volunteer labor and great fundraising efforts, the clubhouse was built by its members and opened its doors in the summer of 1958.
Highlands Community Club is a venue for members, individuals, and organizations to host and participate in social events and recreational activities, providing a welcoming space to foster friendships and support the local community.
